Lutsk Castle - aerial view

Lutsk (Upper) Castle (14-15th centuries) - an architectural monument of national importance. It was built by the Grand Duke Dmitri-Lubart in 1340-1383 as the state's metropolitan residence on the site of the previous wooden fortress. Therefore, there is another name of this stronghold -  Lubart’s Castle. During the 16-18th centuries it was the administrative, judicial and political center of Volyn. Lutsk castle was a favorite residence of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, and at that time Lutsk was called the southern capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1429 the castle hosted the Congress of European monarchs, which met here to discuss the problem of protecting Europe from the Ottoman invaders and other international relations issues.
